Should You Choose a Soft or Firm Body Pillow?

Many people might automatically choose a soft body pillow, but that might not be the right choice. There are a few things to consider before deciding which is right for you.

  • Soft Body Pillows

Soft pillows offer one obvious benefit—they are soft, and therefore comfortable. But while they may feel cozy, they may not offer enough support for your needs. The thing to consider is why you need the body pillow in the first place. If you experience back pain during the night because your spine becomes twisted when you lay on your side, you might want to put a pillow between your knees to help align your spine and avoid the torsion. A soft pillow might simply collapse in this situation, and prove to offer no benefit. A firm pillow might your knee better and provide the relief you are looking for. If you tend to sleep on your back, however, a soft body pillow might provide you just the little bit of comfort you are looking for.

  • Firm Body Pillows

A firm body pillow has one advantage—it is more supportive. Therefore, if you like to tuck the pillow between your legs or behind your knees, it can provide the extra lift you are looking for to help you become comfortable. If you like to “hug” the body pillow by laying on your side and tucking the lower end between your knees while hugging the upper end with your arms, a stiff pillow might be perfect for you if you are a larger person. If you are a smaller person, though, the stiff pillow might be an armful! You might be happier with a pillow of medium firmness. One thing to consider with regard to firm pillows is that the firmer the pillow, the less flexible it will be. A firm pillow may not be flexible enough to be folded or bent, so if you are one of those people who likes to fold the pillow into a “V” shape, a softer pillow might be the way to go.
